Nelson Gomes Teixeira

Artistic journey

Gomes Teixeira’s artistic practice explores the original basis of being, the processes of construction, fragmentation and reconstruction that generate individual and collective identity.
From childhood, the individual is built through heritages, stories and structures that mold him even before he defines himself. These first frames can shape a fragmented identity, sometimes constrained, sometimes unfinished.
Build, deconstruct, rebuild: this movement is at the heart of his practice. Fragmenting the structures received to recover a proper presence, a singular consciousness, is a visual query as much as an existential search.
Through drawing, mixed techniques, paper braiding and the superposition of signs, his work develops a reflection on memory, legacies, forms of resistance and relationships that underpin a lively community. The body appears as a surface of memory, crossed by stories, traces and reconquests.
Crossing, breaking up, moving, reassembling: so many gestures that seek to transform the heritage to bring out a reinvented identity.
Creating is also a form of resistance: resisting erasure, imposed forms, forgetting, but also what prevents the being from becoming itself.
The work seeks this space where identity is reconstructed, not to separate from the collective, but to enter a different relationship and create a singular language that aims to weave memories to write humanity.
